Chapter Fifteen

As Emily got closer to Sage’s booth, she could see that many of the people gathered there were holding photographs in their hands. Some people were waving theirs excitedly while others were holding their photos with an expression of uncertainty. Emily worked her way slowly through the tight knot of people, and she could hear some of them commenting on her presence as she moved. She caught the words “Eternal Rest” and “haunted” several times.

Sage was standing at the front of her booth, the flap of the tent already open and two elderly ladies seated on the chairs. They, too, held photographs in their hands.

“So many?” Emily asked as soon as she caught Sage’s eye.

“Every one of them has a photo of Robert. I just can’t figure out what he’s trying to tell us.”

Sage waved Emily into the back of the tent, announcing over her shoulder that she would be with everyone shortly. As soon as she had closed the curtain to have some privacy, Sage said with a note of worry, “This isn’t good, Em. Some people are excited, but most are scared. You know word about this is going to spread like wildfire through the festival today. Jen’s eyeballs got bigger every time my phone rang last night. It’s great publicity for my business but not for the festival.”

Emily gazed at the curtain as she pictured the people on the other side. “Have everyone write their name and contact information on the back of their photo. Oh, and when they took the photo. Maybe, if we look at them in chronological order, we’ll find some kind of pattern. Have everyone leave their photos with you, and promise them that you’ll keep them posted on anything you find. That way, they aren’t waving those things in front of everyone’s faces at the festival today.”

“Good idea. Okay, I’ll do that while you call Detective Hernandez. He needs to know what’s going on.”

Emily agreed, and soon she was on the phone with Danny, who sounded surprised when Emily told him just how many people had shown up with photographic evidence of a ghost.

“You get ghost hunters at Eternal Rest often, correct?” he asked.

“Lots. And if you’re thinking that it’s extremely rare for a ghost to show up in one photo, let alone twenty or so, then you’re absolutely right. This is—”

“It’s extraordinary,” Danny broke in. “I’ll come by and take a look at the photos later.”

Emily wrapped up her call with Danny and was just emerging from behind the curtain when she noticed the young man who was now handing Sage a photo. He looked familiar, and Emily gazed at him as she tried to remember where she had seen his brown eyes and shoulder-length brown hair before. He mumbled something to Sage, and Emily was only able to hear the word “evidence.”

Did this man know she and Sage were working with the police? As he turned away, Emily realized he had been the one comforting Jess at Tuesday’s volunteer meeting.
